The problem with this is that there are times when an overnight delivery is impossible. What is important is that a company can honestly tell you that they can not get something somewhere overnight, and when you can realistically expect that the item or mail will get there. Many of these companies work miracles, but your last minute package to the other side of the world is imply not going to get there no matter how much someone charges you.
Most overnight delivery services can get anything in the US to anywhere else in the US, with Alaska or Hawaii being the exceptions, but not always. There are times when these items may make it on time as well. However, if you live in New York city and you want to send something at six PM at night to Alaska for an 8 AM delivery, you may be out of luck. Not only is this going to cost you an arm and a leg, it is also going to be late in most cases. Ask about a reasonable delivery time and make sure the recipient knows that while you are trying, it is not always possible.
Overseas overnight delivery services are tricky. Most good companies know when the deadline might be for your items to make a flight and when they have to offer you two day shipping. If they have a vast array of flights crisscrossing the ocean, your may find that you can get something there the next day. Most do not have this, so getting something there as soon as possible is hit and miss at best. Don't forget that flights are delayed and even canceled at times, and your package could be on such a flight.
On the other hand, some overnight delivery services are so reliable that you can always be assured that your items are going to get there on time. This is usually when you want to have something delivered locally or at least within your own state or the ones surrounding yours. These do not have to be packages either. It could be that you want flowers delivered or you want to be sure that food arrives at a certain time for a party. You can call the day before and be sure that whatever it was that you ordered is going to be there on time.
When ordering from a company online, you can be pretty sure that they know how fast they can get something to you. This is because they have been shipping from their warehouses for so long to so many places that they know when they get get something to you. The only exception would be if you live in a very out-of-the way place but that is not reflected in your address. Be sure to contact anyone shipping to you if you have such a situation so that they know how to find you whether they can give you overnight delivery services or not.
